Hi Teachers! I’m Carly Walton and this is the Teach Music Online Podcast!
In the coming weeks and months I am going to be talking a lot of course creation, and course creation specifically for musicians. There is a huge opportunity for music teachers to create and digital courses online and in this episode I’m going to break this down a bit more for you.
Maybe you’ve thought about recording yourself teaching and putting it up on YouTube, or creating pre-recorded lessons for students, or creating courses. This is becoming a more popular topic among studio owners and I think this comes from so many teachers recognizing how effective and powerful online learning has been for themselves and their students! Course Creation is incredible! I’ve been creating digital courses for 2.5 years now and it has become my full-time job! I’m currently in the process of creating a brand new course called “Course Creator for Musicians” and I’ll be releasing that it soon! You can get on the waitlist for this course if you go to https://www.teachmusic.online/waitlist
In this episode I’ll be answering 4 common questions about creating courses
What type of course should I create?
You could create a course on just about ANY topic! Here are a few successful courses I've observed

Beginner guitar lessons
Pop music for guitar
Singer songwriter course
Music Theory 101
Music Theory for the composer
1 year of piano lessons
Piano technique for the advanced pianist
How to prepare for college auditions

Physical therapy for pianists
Drum skills 101
When should you create a course?
If you have an idea or a skill that others will find valuable, then the time to start creating courses is now! There are people willing to pay you for your time so creating a course that someone can purchase and do at their own pace is a huge selling point for the student.
Why would anyone buy a course from you?
You have experience teaching this exact topic to dozens if not hundreds of students
Your experience working with and learning from other mentors, you can now package that into one place
Producing and editing high quality videos will actually help the student learn the skill faster than live lessons
They want the exact transformation that you can provide them
A course could help them prepare for 1-on-1 lessons with you, think of it like a pre-requisite
You are fun, experienced, happy, talented, capable, knowledgeable, and an incredible teacher.
How hard is it to create courses?
Creating a course is a really exciting and fun process! You get to think through each step of the learning process and really get clear on exactly what the student needs to learn to get to their desired transformation. This process varies depending on how in depth you'd like to go into the topic! For example, if you're creating a course specific to preparing for college auditions, that might be 10 videos and a few pdfs, this should take you about a month to create. If you are wanting to create 1 years worth of piano lessons, then this course could take you up to a year to create! But once you've done it, it will be there forever and provide so much value for countless others!
Why should I consider creating a music course?
